[by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] YOUNG MAN DROWNED. BLENHEIM. Aug. 21. A voting man. William Moody, whose parents reside in Sproydnn. Christchurch. was drowned in the l’clorus 1 River this afternoon. He was employed hv Mr E. F. Henly. on the wilderness inland from Canvastown, in training horses. To-day he rode to Cativastown for tiie mail, and in fording the swollen river on the return journey, was swept from his horse and drowned. The body has not been recovered. MAN DIES AFTER BRAWL. AUCKLAND. Aug. 21. An elderly man. believed to he Andrew Snttar. died on Thursday night in Auckland Hospital where he had been admitted from the police station. The cause of death was a tract lire of the base of the skull. Deceased was brought into the police station on a charge of drunkenness, lie was found prostrate on a pavement in \ ietorin Street, where, it is said, lie was concerned in a drunken brawl. How he met with his injuries is not known, ft was discovered at the Police Station that his condition was not normal. and lie was at once removed to the hospital. An inquest was opened to-day and was adjourned. INTOXICATED M 0T( HIT ST. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 21. Forbes Ashcroft Blackmore, a traveller, was convicted hy Mr Wyvcrn \\ ilson, S.M. on a charge of being in charge of a motor car. when under the influence of liquor, ffo was lined ,£lO and costs. A ROUGH TRIP. WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. During a voyage from San Luis to Wellington, an American oil tanker met with very tempestuous weather. Huge seas arose, and the vessel began to labour. Captain Yangerhagen ordered the storm oil to be pumped on the seas. This proving ineffectual the captain ordered the cargo of oil to be used. About one thousand tons ol oil was used before the seas commenced to subside. Bail weather was again experienced, and a man was injured. Second officer Roir had a narrow escape. lie was held hy Chief Officer Peitdie, alter being washed overboard. Roir was rendered unconscious, and sustained severe injuries. POLITICAL. TIM.YRU. Aug. 21. Mr C. .). Talbot to-night agreed to the request of a large deputation to contest the Temuka seat at the next election in the interests of the National Party.
