FARMERS’ UNION

A meeting of the exetiitive of the West Coast branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held yesterday at Greymonth. Mr W. Clayton presiding. Mr Jellie reported that representations bad been made to tbe Railway Department for access to a truck at the end of the Arahiira Siding. That would allow of material being] shifted to the loading yard at Sea view. Tbe President reported on the Conference which bad taken place between tbe Union, the Westland County Council. and the Railway Department, regarding the use ol Messrs Stuart and Chapman's line. Nothing became of it however, as the Department was not willing to put any of its own rolling stork on the line. Tbe President said that, while in Wellington, be bad gone into the matter of organisation, lie expressed the opinion that tbe West Const- district should do its own organising, as be did not think that the branch could very well afford to pay the money out. He was of opinion that tbe branch should appoint it- own organiser, and retain the money that would otherwise be remitted. Tbe .Secretary said the matter would have to be settled otto way ot the other. Mr Jellie favoured the idea of each branch doing its own organising. He hud been doing some canvassing lumself. and had, in two days, secured a large number of new members. If each branch did that, they should be quite entitled tn keep the money that would otherwise go toward an nrguniscr's salary, ft ihe branches did tln ir own organising (tbe cret- of ear bin* being paid) be thought it would make il much easier for the beads of each branch to do organising wi ok.

It was decided that tbe Department, uf Agriculture la* asked tn supply tlm farm at Waimaunga with pedigree jersevs and shorthorns, and that a manager In* appointed, who bad a thorough understanding of dairying and slock.
