DIES JX WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, August 17. The death of Ivan Tarhayelf, which occurred at liis residence, 11, Wellington Road to-day, removes a well-known resident of Wellington who, until quite recent, years, held a high position in the Czar's Imperial army. The late Mr Tai bnyeil. like so many more of his Russian compatriots, was a victim of the Bolshevik revolution’ who found sanctuary in the British Empire. At the outbreak of the late war he was a captain in n Moscow regiment of the Russian Imperial army, and fought on the Eastern front. His capacities as leader and commander and his efficiency in tlie field brought him speedy promotion, attaining .finally the rank of major-general. His division was the last 11 uxxiAi.i Imperial unit engaged in hostilities after the outbreak of the revolution. and at that- time General Tarhayelf was lighting with his divison on the Salonika front. When the actual position then prevailing itt Russia lie-n-nine established, the division was moved to France, where it was disbanded. .Meanwhile the revolutionary forces in Russia had been active, and General Tarhayelf. who possessed 500 acres of timbered hind, found that his properly had been confiscated ami valuable timber had been damaged or removed. Jle was left practically penniless. hut three years later he turned his eyes in the direction of New Zealand. where he decided to settle. He arrived here in April. 1020, with the members of his family, settling in Wellington. Up to the time, of In death he was employed as a clerk in the public AYorks Department, and continued his work right tip till Friday of last week. He was taken suddenly ill and missed away this morning, survived by it widow, one son, George, and a daughter, who is the wife of Mr (). [I. Benge, of AA’ellington. The Minister of Defence advised to- | day that the Department was providing a gun-carriage for the Ittneral oT the deceased gentleman, at which the Department will he represented, as a mark of respect to a distinguished officer who fought with the Allies during the late war. The interment takes place on AYednesday.
