CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board met at Christchurch on Frdiay morning. Present: .Messrs T. Hughes (chairman), W. A. Banks, \\ . P. Spencer, TV. H. Winsor, E. H. Andrews, J. Maze, G. W. Annitage, It. Wild, C ,S. Thompson, W. G. Gow, A\ . Johnston and M. •). Bignell. LATE AIR C. H. OPIK. Before the Isual business of tlio Board was commenced, the following resolution was carried:—“Unit the Board place on record its deep regret at the death of the late Air C. H. Opie whose demise must be regarded as a distinct loss to the administration of our New Zealand educational system, and at the Canterbury Education District in particular. .Mr Opic's long and enthusiastic interest and service in the cause of education, earned for him the lasting gratitude of the members of the Board'and of all friends of education. Further, that the sincere sympathy of the members of the Board he extended to the family of the late Air Opie. together with a copy of the lorcguing resolution.’’ A PPOI.VTAIENTS COAIAIITTEE. The Appointments Committee reported that the school at Okarilo forks had been closed because of the small atlondanco. and that the attendance oflicer (Mr Blank) had reported that he had visited IS homes, nine public school:., and three private schools, and fad found the attendance satisfactory. Regarding the appointment ci teachers, the committee stated that a telegram had been received from the A 1 Blister. stating that he had been asked by tlit' Educational institute to repeal tiio two years’ tenure clause, to restrict. special appointments, and to grant right of appeal against nonappointment. The Board’s opinion was asked for by the .Minister regarding the desirability or otherwise ol taking action as suggested. Tt was resolved to reply that the Board preferred to allow the present legislation to stand. A I‘POI NTAI EXT. Appointments recommended for eoiilirmatiusi included :—Hokitika. _ Mbs l> M. Penlighton. secondary assistant. BUIE DINGS CO.MAI ITTEE. The Buildings Committee reported that, a letter had Ireen received from the Department ol Education in rcp!> to the Board’s representation regarding the committee’s contribution ot one-third of the cost of installing healing systems in schools. The report was adopted, and it was decided to protest against the Board having to pay one-third towards the healing systems. TECHNICAL SCHOOL AI.AXAGERtv In accordance with the regulations for the election and appointment of uiaiia« , erx of technical schools who retire this month hv rotation, it* was agreed to nominate the (allowing Board’s representatives :— Christchurch Technical College. .Mr C.
