A WOMAN’S LAPSE.
AUCKLAND. Aug. 14. Six charges of stealing from city firms .clothing and nianey goads of a total value of £7t) 18s fid were admitted hv Mabel Oliva Cross, aged 32 (Mr Moody). In tlie Police Court to-dav, accused pleaded guilty to further charges of attempting to commit suicide on July 18th. and of committing a breach of I lie conditions nl her release on probation. Evidence was given bv Detective Nnldor, tbat.be and Detective O’Brien recovered the property mentioned in the charges from accused's house. She was quite frank and told them where the art irles wen.' stolen from. After being admitted to hail, she atieiimted to lake her life by drinknig poison. In June 15)21. she was convicted and given five yours’ probation on charges of shoplifting. Mr Moody, for accused, said that accused was married and bad one child. It was a strange case. She stole the articles but made no attempt to use them with the exception of a pair of stockings. If she wore given another chance, tier husband would take her to the country or right out of New Zealand. Adjutant Gordon (Salvation Army) said accused bad a home any woman could be proud of. and she could not understand her (accused’s) action. Her husband denied her nothing and had a good income. The effects of the poisoning were still causing her n great deal of pain. .Magistrate Poynton said lie certainly would not extend probation. By doing so lie would lx l reducing probation to comic opera. Tf he did not think she had punished herself, he would i give her five veafc-' reformative deton- i tion. but be would take this feature I into consideration, ; Chief Detective Gumming said she ! had been stealing since last September, 1 although she was on probation on a j cliarge of stealing from Hart Bros. [ A(( used was sentenced to three j mouths' imprisonment, and for steal- j ing goods from Milne anil Clioyce Ltd., j she was admitted to probation for five | years.
