Spencer was nominated as chairman of the Jinildings Committee at yesterday's special meeting of the Can- . tcrlniry education Hoard. “I don’t think so,” said -Mr T. Hughes, chairman of (lie Hoard. Mr W'insor: ‘‘l sincerely hope not.” This was a prelude to a dehate which stirred the Board, and in its course allegations were made that country members of the Board worked against the town members in order to gain the chairmanship of the Standing Committees. and that before the elections eventuated members were approached, canvassed. and “buttonholed.” “HE HAS hirin' AIK." “Then.” said Mr W'insor. “I protest." He went on to say that lie ap- | predated .Mi' Spencer as a man. but he I slid not think Air Spemer was fitted 1 for the position of chairman of the Buildings Committee. “I am doing ' this as it protest against this feeling beI tween country and town members,” lie ended. At this stage Air Spencer arose and I stated that lie would not stand for tin position of chairman of' the Building Committee. “Air W'insor is a friend of mine,” be concluded, “and what he has said this morning has hurt me.” “I’Al A SPUUT.” Asked by members if he would act on the Buildings Committee for the ensuing year, Air W'insor said “No.” ' “I am astonished at this,” said Ah W r , A. Banks. “I thought Air W'insor was a sport.” I Replying, Air W'insor said he was a 1 good a sport as anyone round the Board i table, hut he refused to act on the I Buildings Committee. He would sit hack for a year and criticise—and. to his mind, criticism was necessary. He would bring something to light in tlie future. Interjecting, the ehaidmnn said he thought Air W'insor was out. of order. “But T never say a thing unless I mean it,” said Air W'insor. AIEAIBKBS “BUTTONHOLED.” It was well-known, said Air E. H. Andrews, that members on the Board were approached and buttonholed l>efore the elections of the various Standing Committees. He had been approached. and lie knew that- ofh.’i members had been. too. Everyone knew about it. This ended the discussion. Mr IT .T. Bignell (ex-chairman of the Board) was elected chairman of the Buildings Committee.
