The citizens were given their first opportunity to-dav of inspecting the American Fleet, but the day was so cold and uninviting, that only a few hundreds availed themselves of the chance. The principal event of the day was the Victoria and Navy Leagues' ball in the Town liall. a brilliant lunctioli, that was attended by the Admirals and officers and many hundreds of citizens. The chid centre of attraction for the men in the evening was the Navy lasagne Club on Princess Wharf, where dancing tun held. To-morrow morning, Admiral Habitant and 300 officers will leave for Kotorua. J DUNEDIN ENTERTAINMENTS. DUNEDIN, August 13. Many friends now have been made by the American visitors, who today enjoyed Dunedin's sunshine. The programme of public entertainments included motor drives to the country for the officers and a Hotary Club Luncheon, Private people, too, were busy extending hospitality to the sailors. In the evening there were a number of private and public- dinners and dances for all ranks, and many attended the boxing competitions. ANNOYING THE VISITORS. 011R.ISTCTIURCH, Aug. I I. Some sensation was caused in Christchurch hist night, when it. became known that all men on leave from the American destroyer squadron had been ordered back to thenships. It is umlorst-ood that the action ol the authorities was taken because of trouble caused by a small disorderly section in the- city, bent on annoying the sailors, and following an alf ray io Victoria Square. One of the older sailor-, alter the affray said that strict orders hail been given that there must he no fighting under even the severest provocation. The men had been ordered not to retaliate, hut to move on, when individuals became truculent towards them. He was convinced that the affray wouh not have taken place if disparagii remarks had not liecn made during the. parade. INDIGNATION EX I’ll ESSED. CHRISTCHURCH. August 11. Indignation is warmly expressed by many citizens to-day at yostoreve events and there is a general demand that the police should he instructed to take a firm line with young hoodlums who are disgracing the city by annoying the sailors. The naval men are earning warm praise for their good conduct. SIGHT-SEEING. AUCKLAND, Aug. I I. The cold stormy weather, which has prevailed since tne day of the Fleet's arrival, to-day gave place to sunshine. The men ashore are taking full advantage of the perfect condition.- tor sight-seeing. Admiral Robison and 330 officers left for Rotorua this morning, accompanied by Sir .lame-. I’ai-r. rcpivsen ting the Government, tin Monday 300 officers proceeded to Rotorua and CO officers to Mumillon. I’.VI.MEHSTON NORTH VISITED. PALMERSTON NORTH, August II A detachment of twenty officers and two hundred and thirty members of the American Fleet from Wellington arrived hero by special train this morning. They were taken on tour of the district, after being welcomed by the Mayor, Mr Nathan. A programme of festivities was arranged for a visit of one day- only.
