McLEAN'S PICTURES.

"THE HUMMING BIRD”— FRIDAY. Gloria Swanson has a rofo entirely different, to those site has played before in her latest picture for Paramount “The Humming Bird.” Miss Swanson acts with fine zest and fervor and proves by her characterisation of the little Apache girl Toinctto that she is tin actress of no mean ability. It has been handled in a masterly fashion by the director, Sidney Olcott, who has lifted it well above the ordinary. The acting of Miss Swanson impressed us and ran away with the picture for a while, but later while we enthused just as much about her acting the picture interested us intensely. -Miss Swanson plays the role of a little Apache Toinette. She is commonly known as “The Humming Bird,” an elusive person as far as the police wero concerned, and badly wanted by them. Then there comes to the little cafe where she dances, a newspaper man with whom she falls in love. He goes to the war and she finds herself discovered and throw'll into prison. During an airship raid she escapes and makes her way to the house of her lover who is seriously wounded. Thero she finds happiness when lie recovers, hut Infer Her dreams fall away, when she is recognised by an inspector of police. How she finds happiness would not he fait- to tell as it is graphically told in the closing scenes of an intensely iutreesting and thrilling picture. A two reel comedy, gazette and travelogue wifi conclude this big star. The prices for this magnifieient programme arc Dress Circle 2s, Stalls Is Gil, children under twelve, sixpence. Saturday. A big Alliance special “A Broadway Madonna.”
