At the meeting of the Westland County Council on Friday, the question of the classification of the roads for traffic was referred to the Public Works Committee for a general report and recommendation. The regulations made by tlic Government under the act retelling to main highways, provide tor the classification of roads. The local Isidics arc called on to classify their roads or streets so as to limit loading to the ordinary carrying capacity of the roads. This limitation is a safeguard against any abuse of roads by indiscriminate heavy loading so easily possible in
these days of motor lorries. The regulations provide for four classes ot road. The first class is to carry traffic up to ten tons; the second not more than eight toils; the third not more than four tons; and the fourth class no more than two tolls and a half. The local body lias to give the public notice of the proposed dassili '.cation, after which application is to be made to the Minister for approval of the list, and in submitting same any objections lodged, shall be sent forward also. The Minister may approve or alter, and no i lass.ilication shall come into force till approved by the Minister. Cpon approval public* notice of the classification is to l.e git on. and no variation of same shall lie permitted without the Minister’s approval. I pon the roads being classified as provided, no person shall use or operate ally motor lorry on -Itch a load with a load exceeding the weight, prescribed m the elas.-i----iicatioii. Bui. a local authority may
give written peril] issiotl for any licensed motor lorry subject to swell conditions as to weather, speed, weight, number of trips, payment <d damage etc., i , use any load as per -noli conditions. As an indication of the probable limit of weight on Westland roads i; may be mentioned that the Highways Board is fixing the heaviest weight for the main road from Teremaau to Wiiiho at eight tons that is a soroild cla-s road.
