U.S.A. FLEET.
[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] FIFTY DESERTERS. (Received this day at 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY. August 7. The police estimate that fifty American sailors deserted during the fleet’s stay at Sydney. One sailor put in an appearance shortly alter the ships sailed, but he was not a deserter; lie had drunk well, but not wisely, and lie will lie sent to rejoin bis ship at Auckland. Three other deserters were found in a similar condition in the streets.
DESTROYERS IN TROUBLE. .MELBOURNE. August 7. While steaming down the bay the United States destroyer Chase experienced engine trouble and returned to port. Another destroyer grounded on a sand bank at the side ol the channel. Official reports show that only nine men deserted ill Alelbourne.
