COW 1! UNS AMOK. SENSATIONAL INCIDENT AT SAFE HAMILTON. Aug. 5. A sensational incident, resulting in serious injury to Miss A. Kelso, of Tamahere. owner of Patch and other prominent hunters, anil minor injuries to her sister, marred a sale conducted at Tamahere of Mr Day’s “Bencarrow” Jersey herd.
A timid cow being led into a packed marquee, went mad on sighting the crowd, and breaking loose from her attendant. careered around the ring. •Seeing to exit the infuriated animal reared upon the seats. The two Misses Kelso were sitting at the spot selected hv the animal.
.Miss A. Kelso was hit forcibly on the head by the cow’s horns and .sustained concussion. She was also injured about the body by the beast’s horns. The younger Miss Kelso was thrown to the ground and appeared uertain to he seriously hurt when the animal was overpowered. Miss A. Kelso was unconscious, hut recovered later. The younger -Miss Kelso is little the worse for her exciting experience. fi\LE OF JERSEY HERD. HAMILTON. Aug. A. The disposal sale ol Mr T. I’-. Day s Jersey herd, one ol the best known in the Dominion, was held at iamahere. Hamilton to-day. High prices were realised and competition was very keen. The four-year-old hull Masterful. imported from Jersey Island, winner of many championships in New Zealand, brought 550 guineas, which is held to he the highest price obtained at auction in the Dominion of a pedigree hull. Cows sold to JOB guineas, the first twenty offered averaging 100 guineas. Young heifers brought to 107 guineas. Thirty rows averaged 76 guineas, ten two-year heifers 8!) guineas, eleven yearling heifers 73 guineas. eighteen yearling hulls 50 guineas, and four aged hulls Till guineas. The total of the sale was £0294.
NEW SHIPPING SERVICE. DUNEDIN, Aug. 5. This afternoon a representative gathering of citizens was held to mark the arrival of the motor ship Port Dunedin, the pioneer carrier in the newly inaugurated direct service between England and the South Island ports. Reference was made by the Mayor and other representative citizens to the benefits this service would confer on this part of the Dominion, in that it would mean a considerable reduction in the time occupied in the journey, a corresponding reduction in freights and insurance, while the danger of pillage would he considerably minimised. A verdict of suicide, while temporarily depressed, was returned at the inquest on Hamid Xorthover. aged 30 years. Secretary of the Eltham Daii\ Coy., who was found dead with his throat cut the previous day. The Company auditor stated that a request for the production of receipts appeared to prey on the deceased's mind. His hooks were excellently kept, hut receipts for about- £12(1 were missing. In one letter to the Company Directors, deceased stated that his nerves had broken down, and lie could not carry on. He hade the directors good-hve. hut lie gave no in (liention Unit he intended tu commit suicide.
