The crew of tho R.M.S. Makura which arrived at Wellington on Tues-
day from San Francisco, had an exeitig story to tell of the hooking of a 14-foot shark by tho chief engineer, while the vessel was working cargo off Rarotonga. A heavy line with a chninnttached hook hailed with a piece of meat was used to catch the monster, which fought for an hour before it was exhausted.

]ll a reference to the compulsory retirement of B. and T. officers, the secretary of the Officers’ Association (Mr 11. K. Combs) stated in his biennial report: “The Department lias made a splendid advance towards this goal. for. outside three notable exceptions, all the forty-year service men have now been retired. The consequence has been a distinct improvement in the promotion prospects, and, while these are still far from what one would like to see them, the gain is something to he thankful for, and I believe members generally appreciate what the Department has done. It is hoped that the three exceptions will soon join the superannuated officers, and thereby draw the last little sting that lies in the carrying uni of this policy.”

Mrs Sarah Ann Williams, relict of the late Mr •). Williams, formerly a resident of Kcefton, died ill Wellington Hospital on Tuesday, at the age ol 78 years. Deceased leaves a family of three sons and four daughters. The sons are Messrs .John and Louis Williams, of Wellington, and Hugh Williams of Auckland, and the daughters are Mosdanies F. A serious accident happened at the Mar.-deu Sawmill yesterday, Archibald Clark, a married man. 38 years of age (residing at Kutherglen) was engaged in the hush with a block and tackle when the rope broke and the block carried away, l ining Mr Clark on the left leg. The man was conveyed to the Grey River Hospital, where it was found that he had sustained a compound fracture of the lower portion of the leg. He is progressing salisfactor-
