SWIMMER FAILS
[Reuter Telegrams.]
(Received this day at 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, August 5. Colonel B. C. Freyberg, V.C., who started the Channel swim from Cape Grisnez last night was compelled to give up, half a mile from the English shore, Kingsdown at one in the afternoon. He was abreast of St. Margaret’s bay at 12.30, but was exhausted and unable to make head way although sheltered by .an accompanying tug. He once drifted back thirty yards. The occupants of a motor boat cheered, and shouted “Not that way old fellow,” but his condition was such that ho did not appear to understand.
