At the AYarden’s Court this morning when hearing applications for seven prospecting licenses by the Rimu Dredging Coy., Ltd., for areas at Soul' Hokitika. AYarden l.awry stated that he noted that in each application the surveyor had marked the pegs with an “X”. He stated that the regulations ordered the pegs to be marked with a distinguishing mark, but in this instance there were several applications and all had the same mark. He thought that in the event of any dispute in the future the uniformity of the marks might cause some trouble, especially as the areas might lie turned into claims if the prospecting proved satisfactory. He suggested that it would la? advisable to mark the several areas XI. XII, etc., and then there would be no cause for a possible mix-up. Air Murdoch (who appeared for the applicants) agreed that the stipulation was a very reasonable one. stating that he always impressed on applicants the necessity of complying with the strict reading of the regulations. Mr I.awrv added that the proper marking out of claims was necessary, otherwise it. made it difficult for outsiders to gather the actual boundaries, while it also made it difficult for tfie parties themselves to do so where the distinguishing marks were not properly defined. In the present instances where tho areas had been laid out by a surveyor the applications would he granted.
