Ins wile and family of four, they escaping in their night clothes. The house was owned hv Mrs Lyons and was insured but the amount was unknown. Peterson has £350 on the furniture. A CLERK'S THEFTS. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 5. Thomas Alexander Mitchell. •!•). formerly clerk of the Hospital Board, pleaded guilty this morning w> charges of stealing monies totalling £->BB. the property of the Board. He was committed for sentence. The auditor gave evidence that the amount involved was £1.594. Accused had secured the motiev by signing the names ot ex-em-plovees to salary vouchers.
WATERSIDE TROUBLE. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 3. A deadlock continues at Lyttelton over the unloading of phosphate and guano from the Pearlmoor ami Penmoroah. HALF-MILLION BONUS. HAMILTON. Aug. 5. At the end of August the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Coy. will distribute among its suppliers £oQO.O(.D as bonus payment for season’s suply. It is claimed this, with certain subsidies, will give suppliers to Hie company a better total payment for blitter fat than any other company in the provinces. FOUND HEAD. AUCKLAND. Aug. 5. The body of Roy M. Furness, of the firm of C. H. Furness and Coy. was found jn his motor ear in the Domain drive about 7 o'clock this morning and a bottle containing powdered stryohnine, was lying on the floor of Ihi' ear. He was .'SO years of age and had just returned from a health trip to the Great Barrier. He feared he was suffering from an incurable malady, and was in a state of nervous prostration.
SUICIDE IN CEMETERY. CHRISTCHURCH. August 5
Am elderly man committed suicide on a grave at the Bromley cemetery this morning by drinking prussic acid. A funeral service was being conducted ten yards away at the lime. Ihe man’s name is unknown.

Cyril Thompson, mine deputy at Dobson mine, was charged this morning at the Magistrate’s Court with firing a shot within a radius ol 20yds from a place in Dobson mine which was not found clear of inflammable gas. The Mines Department Inspector gave evidence that the conditions acre sufficient to cause a disaster. Magistrate Lowry convicted and lined defendant (1 and costs.
(Valter l.eitch, manager of Dobson Mine, was charged with tailing to airange adequate ventilation at the mine. ihe hearing is proceeding. BEST- GETS FIVE, YEARS. AUCKLAND. August 5. At the Supreme Court Albert Edward Best, aged 2(5. for the attempted murder of his sister was sentenced to five years hard labour. Judge Herdmali said the only course was to impose a substantial term. It Best had exercised a little more pressure. with the razor the girl would have been killed instantaneously. To some extent the prisoner was inllueneed with drink and on account of this and bis youth the sentence would be lighter than otherwise.
