Their mother, a widow, loves both equally and is happy at the success of Steve. Steve goes to see Alice Farrell to tell her the good news of his promotion, an increase in salary, and ends up by asking her to marry him. Alice becomes engaged to him. Ten lien t. Steve's employer, is also in love with Alice, but when he learns that Steve is the lucky man he calls him into flic office and congratulates him. Joe lias been embezzling funds from his employer, and changing the figures on the hooks lor a considerable time. Five years pass. Steve, haunted l.y memories, determines to revisit the scene of his funner life. He finds out that Alice, now a widow, has lust returned from abroad. While on the outskirts of the town, lie meets a little hoy pounding away ou a drum. I hey become friends. He manages to meet .Toe. and confronts him with his perfidy. Joe promises to confess, anil arranges to meet liim seven days later in a down iown (-ale. A\ hen finally they meet. Joe refuses to confess. Steve threatens him. hut leaves, uncertain what to do next. .Too is murdered. Steve passing by the home ot Alice Tennant sees it: afire, climbs ill and rescues a little hoy, whom he recognises as the little hoy ol the drum, and realizes that it is Alice’s child. Soon after lie is arrested for flic murder of Joe.
