The Auditor and Controller-General in bis report to Parliament-, mentions that contracts by Government Dennrtmo ii t s should l*e lorwarded to that offiie for notation, and as instancing the value of such system of comparison says; “Great differences have been ascertained to exist in prices paid for similar service under different contracts. For instance, a scrutiny of several contracts for like service obtaining in the chief centres oT the Dominion disclosed the fact that the Auckland. Wanganui. AYcllington. Christchurch and Invercargill firms’ prices for a certain item ex< ceded that of a Dunedin linn for the same item by 92(1 per cent. 1090 per cent. 710 per cent. 800 per cent and 1070 per cent respectively. Another item shows a- difference of 810 per cent. 971) per cent. 010 per cent. 1900 per cent and 1200 per cent respectively in excess of Dunedin. These are only two out of roughly a hundred items. 1 ’ adds the report, “and they may lie considered a fair sample of others. The explanation afforded to Audit ill this instance is that with the exception of the Dunedin firm the prices are controlled bv a ring operating in <-:i>li -'entre. If tlii-, is a fair sample ot tin* method of fixing prices to the public with regard to other services it is not difficult, to account for a considerable lactor in the increased cost of living.”
