A FURTHER HITCH

There is a further hitch ill the settlement of the shipping dispute. The terms submitted as a basis for settlement included, inter alia, an undertaking by the seamen that job-control fie abandoned and guarantees by the Seamen’s Union that crows and individual: members would not- lie permitted to tie up vessels by job action, in consideration of which, and in order to facilitate a settlement of disputes as they arise on different ships, tribunals be established at the different ports consisting of representatives of the Seamen’s Union and the owners, empowered to settle these disputes; a Board of Conciliation to be appointed to settle major disputes; a round table conference to be held immediately to deal with wages conditions and logs between the Shipowners and Seamens Union and arrive at an agreement which will lie binding for a period' of twelve months; the wages and conditions agreed upon to be inserted in the articles of employment, pending such agreement the wages and cinditions of the old award to be observed.

The trouble arose over the guarantees to lie given by tile seamen in regard to job control and the conditions under which the tribunals are to work.

When the Conference met the owners intimated they would not concede more than already done and the Confe re nee a d.iou rn ed.

After a meeting of both parties the conference was resumed and it is still sitting in a determined effort to overcome the unexpected bitch. MELBOURNE. July 29.

After a lengthy sitting the shipping conference failed to reach an agreement and adjourned till Friday to enable both sides to discuss terms.
