The stranger was seen liy neighbours to linger at the door, and it was; afterwards found that the place had been burglariously entered. On the discovery being made a description of the visitor was given to the police. As is usual in most of these eases, the description was of the slightest, hut it proved sufficient for Detectives fleer and Rycroft, who this morning accosted a young man, a stranger to the city, and after interrogating him took him to the police station. That their suspicions were well founded was proved hv the " swag that was afterwards traced to his possession. This included a large number of loose gems, obviously removed from rings, several sovereigns and half-sovereigns, a large number of foreign coins and other articles. totalling in value somewhere between L'3oo and CIOO. So far as can be ascertained up to the present, accused has probably been concerned in about twenty burglaries committed in all four centres of the Dominion and in smaller towns.
