TRAMP STEAMER’S ROUGH PASSAGE.
DUNEDIN, July 22. Heavy gales and high seas were encountered by the tramp steamer llollinside on a recent voyage I nun llunburv to Dunedin. The vessel arrived here on Tuesday afternoon with 2.(100.01 111 feel of hardwood for discharge at Lhc four main New Zealand ports.
The llolliuside commenced loading at Httnbury on June 19. The last ot her heavy freight was placed on board on July 6. and the vessel cleared the West Australian port fit S p.m. the same day. The first day fit sea was marked by moderate weather, but squally weather prevailed on the billowing day, which indicated that the steamer would have a rough time on the passage across the South Australia n flight. By midnight on July 8 the s.liin was battling against a strong gale. Heavy seas Hooded her decks, fore and aft. but no damage was done. The gale continued till the evening of July 9, when conditions became much more Invotirable, moderate winds and seas prevailing lor ten days. The llolliuside steamed along at her usual speed, but she received another set-back on tHo evening of .July 19, when she ran into a north-west gale, accompanied by heavy sens. The vessel's decks were again Hooded fore and aft, almost continuously. The gale abated early on the morning of July 20, and the remainder of the voyage was marked bv moderate win Vs and seas. The llolliuside occupied 1 urtoen days ten hours on the run Iron Bunbury to Otago Heads, ail average speed of eight knots. The vessel is the average type of cargo steamer and lias been “tramping” round tin* world tor some years. I udei terms of the present charter she went from Norfolk (Virginia) to Port Arthur (Texas) to loud for several Australian ports. After completing that voyage across the Pacific, the steamei proceeded to Ocean and Nauru Islands to load phosphates for Fremantle. When this freight hail been discharged she went to lLinbury and loaded her present cargo. The llolliuside, which is owned bv Messrs Charlton. M’Callum and Co.. Newcastle-oii-Tyne. is making her first visit to New Zealand. The ship, which is under charter to Andrew Weir and Co., will sail at about- tile end of this week for Lyttelton and Wellington. From the latter port .site will proceed to Westport to replenish her bunkers ljefore going to Auckland to complete discharge. The llolliuside will steam from Auckland to Nauru to load phosphates for an Australian port. When the Hollinside was steaming up the coast on Monday afternoon, the boatswain. J. M’Greeny. fell down t ie starboard bunker, a distance ot 18lt. and sustained severe body bruises. He was attended by Captain Brown, who did all that was possible for the sufferer.
DEATH FROM INJURIES. TE AWAMUTI. July 24. E o. Spragg. a married man with three children, died in the Waikato Hospital this morning as the result of injuries received a week ago through an electric power pole falling on him.
