Tin'. most concerned I <>lk about the .National party in politics arc the oppoMng parties in Parliament. 1 ho Prime Minister went afield to Palmerston North to plead that lie had not hulled the door against the Liberals, the Labor is talking in as humorous a mood as it can hut it is whistling only to Keep its courage up. In plain fait, the natural move on the part of the Liberals is not appreciated by political opponents. Yet it was tlie only eutir.se open to the Liberal leader. He had made it clear he was desirous „f a National party, and lie had conceded the leadership to Mr Coates, who was to he at liberty to so!ec-t Iris evi n colleagues. But the Liberals stipulated they must have a voice in the policy of the new party. This did not suit the Conservative element, within the Reform fold, and that section was strong enough to stifle fusion possibilities. The untrammelled of the Reform Tarty were and are for fusion, and Mr Coates is trying to explain a way a difficulty which is of his own making. All that "as necessary was for him to assert himself as leader in fact, and take the broad road where there would lie room for the Reformer and Liberal to walk side hy side. As it is he has elected to proceed along the narrow track where only the Reformer cares to tread, and lie lias to keep oil explaining why he is pursuing that route. Meanwhile the National Party is growing in strength and stature. Some oi the press which advocated fusion are rather -etracing their steps seeing that the Reform party will not dance to the tune, but sham support such as that is quite dispcnsi.hle. and "the National party will appeal directly to the teason of the people as the obvious political step for the country to take to set its house in order for the general election. A national policy must now be declared fully in keeping with the aims and aspirations of the party, and the sooner this is published the better. Ml- Wilford with the support he is receiving can afford to ignore the
va peon rings Vf his opponents and go right ahead witli a. true reform in New Zealand, politics.
