'Excelsiors 22, School 3

The third grade game School versus Excelsiors was played at 1.30 on No 1, playing field. Excelsiors fielded only fourteen players, hut they were a t erv solid combination, being much heavier ami faster than the School, who scent- , ed to have a day oil', and did not give j the bright and nippy display that is usuallv the case. Several of the whites win, usually play a dazzling and heady game were right oil colour, and seem- | cd to he able to do anything but tho right thing, some throwing forward whilst others gave erratic passes and sometimes failed to hold a pass. All ~f the white forwards gave good displays, hut they did not seem to play with their usual pep, although at times in the second spell they put more ginger into their attacks. In these day- wh'-n good dribbling displays arc entirely absent from games witnesscd on the Square, it was good to see some of the "bite forwards giving exhibitions of the dribble, and two players, individually controlled the ball very well, giving an indication that with a little more practice they will ho tough propositions indeed. The fielding of the hall hv the school was not up to their usual standard and this got them into trouble more than once. The Excelsiors* have very useful acquisitions in the three players from the Arahura road and they all gave outstanding displays. coal. The old saying that it you don t speculate, you'll never accumulate was not borne out hv fact in this game because' Kuinaru went oil speculating and Kanieri -did the accumulating. If Kumara had not been so load id the hoot in their efforts to stem the Kanieri rushes the score of the latter might not have boon so large. Both teams had some of their regular players ahsent, but Kumara had the biggest sprinkling of raw material which needs knocking into shape. 'I he largeness cf the Kanieri team’s score does I,at indicate that they had it all their own way. but it was through tho speculating tendency of the reels that allowed Kanieri to get tho majority of their tries. Some 1 ot the Kumara players when they got the hall did not seem to know what to do with it. Others on numerous occasions hung on too long, spoiling their chances, whilst several times one of the inside backs took upon himself to go through all his opponents instead ot passing to his winger who could have played tho halt to better advantage. Wild kicking when near the goal line was alscj indulged in hy Kumara which nullified some of their attacking movements. .lust after the commencement Kanieri were awarded a penalty in a good position and Free converted with a nice kick. Kanieri .‘i, Kumara 0. After some forward rushes hy both sides in which play Kumara wore the more aggressive, tlie- rods carried play over the Kanieri line where Whilo.v was compelled to force smartly. Kumara set no the attack again but H. TTalilert picked up nicely and passed to Rooney who knocked on. From the serum Kanieri got Lhe hall, and after the hacks handled tho hall went to TYhiley who crossed, but h roe’s kick from a difficult angle went wide. Kanieri (5. Kumara 0. Shortly after a Kanieri forward rush, carried play up the field to near Idle' Kumara 25 when an infringement resulted, hut Orowcntt missed a fairly easv shot. Kumara. more by good luck than good judgment, carried play right down to the Kanieri goal line, the hall going out al the corner, hut they could not break through the Kanieri defence and the home team gradually worked play to the 25 where a scrum resulted, the first spell ending shortly afterwards with the score Kanieri li. Kumara 0.

In the second spell Kanieri kicked off and took play into Kumara territory, but the reds immediately retaliated tend carried play by a forward rush to mid-way between the half-way peg and the Kanieri 25 where a penalty was awarded them hut the shot at goal failed. Play remained at the Kanieri 25 for a little while until Kanieri brought it to within 10 yards of the half-way. where a penalty was awarded to the reds and although the attempt at goal tailed it was a good one, nevertheless. Front the 25 kick play still centred about it. when play was taken to the Kanieri goal line, a scrum resulting, Kanieri eventually forcing. Front the 25 Free's kick bounced out about ten yards over half, from where the reds carried play back into Kanieri territory where a scrum resulted, after ' which Boyd got the ball and after beating half a-dozen of his opponents, (passed to Fleming.

who was caught hut after the resulting scramble Free got; over to score, but Boyd’s kick missed. Kanieri 11, Kumara 0. Front the kick Kumara carried play again into Kanieri territory, Kanieri bringing it back to halfway where it remained for a while when Boyd kicked away, a Kumara player making a terrific swipe at the hall with his foot, missed and Boyd who went tip fast, kicked again, but another red player was more successful with his spec kick and the ball went out, thus ending one of Boyd’s hurricane rushes. Kumara brought play again to the Kanieri 25, where a serum and a free kick for Kumara resulted, hut they failed to convert a fairly easy kick. Shortly after the kick Glass secured and carried the hall down the field where lie passed to Wiiiley, a serum resulting. Play now centred in Kumara territory where there was another scrum Iroin which a > Kanieri forward attack was set tip, culminating in a try through tile [ Kumara trying to stem the tide with I mighty speculative kicks instead ot its- | ing the well-known orthodox methods. Cable Association,] SYDNEY, July 10. A'eslordav aJTerno.'m in the presence of ten thousand people, and in line weather, on, a heavy ground, the New Zealand League Football team scored The initial win of their tour by (Ideating the Newcastle and .Maitland district reps at Newcastle by twentynine points to eleven.

The- game was patchy, and sometimes it was uninteresting. Newcastle's defeat was mainly due to their last opportunities and to their faulty passing.

A feature of the game was the New Zealand full-hack Huffy's goal kicking and his long line kicks.

Although Newcastle almost invariably won the ball front the .scrums, they handled it badly, and they were tillable to follow up their advantage. New Zealand forced the game strongly in the first half and they led at the interval by 1! lo la the second .-pi'll. Newcastle's tackling was deadly, but the visitor's superior wc-igliL told.
