BASIS OK SE'ITLMENT. MELBOURNE, July 17. The prospects of a settlement of the shipping dispute are brighter. The Shipowners’ Association to-day announced that it would meet the Trades llall Dispute’s Committee on Tuesday in conference, with a view to arriving at a settlement. 'the proposed basis of settlement is that the Transport Croup of Unions shall guarantee that job control shall not he practised by the Seamen’s Union. The shipowners undertake to place on the articles a statement that the terms of the cancelled award shall be obtained by them. It is also proposed that two clauses of this award shall he altered enabling:; the shipowners to penalise any crews attempting job control, altered clauses to he placed in the .Articles, and the seamen to sign an agreement. SYDNEY, July 17. Six leaders of the Seamen’s Union have gone to .Melbourne to participate in the conference between the Disputes’ Committee and the owners. The owners have decided not to insist. that the seamen resume duty before the negotiations have commenced. At I p.m. the .Matinganui sailed for Now Zealand.
STEWARDS INVOLVED. SYDNEY. July 17. Owing to the North Const Company employing non-Union seamen, the stewards have been instructed by tlicit Union to hand in their notices. There are now eighty-seven vessels and 3305 employees idle in Australian ports.
