The Westland County rate collector notifies in this issue that the rale demands for the current financial year are posted, and rates are payable within fourteen days oi demand. A rebate of 5 per cent will he made on ail current tales paid by .‘fist August, alter which date unpaid rates may lit l sued for without further notice. It is further notified that in view ol the redaction in the annual rale, ratepayers: are expected to pay all demands promptly, and so assist the Council to meet ils expenditure without, recourse to bank accommodation which entails expense for bank interest-. Those charges in turn add to the burden oi the ratepayers who would be helping themselves by prompt payment of rales.

A Weights and .Measures I>s 11 was introduced in the House on Thursday by the Hon. (t. J. Anderson. A elitel in-
spector is to be appointed. The inspectors are given wide powers. Ihe Imperial standard pound and yard are to be the source from which ail weights and measure's are to be derived, and the several weights and measures derived therefrom shall be the only weights and measures to he used in New Zealand. The Governor-General may proclaim the adoption ot the metric svstem. Part. 3 of the Bill deals with the use of weights and measures for trade. Goods sold by retail by weight or measure shall he sold by net weight or measure only. Hie net weight or measure* of packed goodsold bv retail must be stated on tie package. To state- incorrectly the weight or measure is an offence. It is an offence to supply short weight or measure. Nothing in this part of the Act shall prevent the use in trade of a weight or measure of the metric system for tile selling of goods by weight or measures according to that system. Part -1 deals with the stamping and verification ot weights and measures. Power is taken to declare by proclamation that the measurement of electric-
ity. temperature pressure or gravity
