Jhe volume of goods traffic on the .Midland Railway going from the West Coast to Canterbury continues steadily in increase, and the quarter iiist ended lias proved a record. Last week ilie tonnage transported from west to east was 801 t, compared with 853 d tons m the preceding week. The largest amount of freight sent through tlio tunnel from this side in any one week so far has been 9037 tons, but tho indications are that the present week is going to see that record eclipsed. As showing the expansion of the traffic. the amount of freight sent eastwards during the quarter ending .Tumi 30th last, was more than one hundred thousand tons, this being in excess of the quantity sent during the same three months of last year to the extent of approximately seventeen thousand tons.
