Eventually it will act as a bridge from side to side ol the lake outlet to serve tile purpose named. The lake has heen phenomenally low during the last month, which has heen of great assistance in the carrying nut of the scheme. Gangs of men have heen making pood use ol the tact to pet the rock formations ready for laying in tile liases ol the third lourtli and fifth piers. The sixth, when it is undertaken, will mark the centre ol the dam. I’-ven the balance will he kept, so that Hie cross-section will not he altered. It was thought that the lake would have risen considerably with the big thaw following the snowfall, but very little difference Inis been noticed. Decently over ninety men have been working at the dam. All the available local labour has long since heen absorbed. In the coining spring the farmers, it iexpected, will find it hard to " man ” their holdings, unless they can afiord to make attractive offers.

During the course of hi- address at the Wainiaunga Kxpei imetita. larm vesterdav on •' Diseases and conditions affecting dairy cattle," Mr J. R. Kerrigan. M.R.C.V.S.. said the West t oa.-t wtts not a very good sheep producing district, but the time had arrived when it was absolutely essential that tlicac should be more sheep ill Ibis district than there were at present. Ragwort was gradually spreading in this district, and it would he re-ponsible for a heavy mortality among cows and horses, in order to beep it down—it, would not be possible to eradicate it —it would be necessary to put -beep on it. Sheep were not nearly so susceptible to the di-emv as were cows and horses, and the time had arrived when the farmers should seriously consider the question of increasing their Mocks, if only for the aforementioned purposes.
A section of 10-1 acres near Fergusons was the subject <f some controversy at the meeting ot the Westland Land Board yesterday afternoon. After counsel had addressed the Board, a discussion followed, and there was a divisnn among members, two (Messrs C hillm and .Mnllinson) desiring a further adjournment to give the parties a further opportunity to come to a mutual agreement, and Air Ward and the Commissioner being in favor
