The Kmpire Press delegates sailed by the Empress of France irom Southampton. They were fa rowel led by Sir James Allen (N.Z. High (,'ommi.ssioiier) and a large party of Australians. Lord lim nhain in acknowledging the good wishes, said the delegates were going to Australia to catch one another’s ways. They were unable to do so unless they came into contact with those responsible for the government of the Dominions. It was with a real sense of patriotic, duty whereon they were leaving. In a later interview Lord Burnham said hie believed the conference would produce a better understanding all round. The journey was purposely phi lined via Canada which was really the All Red route. The conference would discuss, not merely press subjects, hut those of general interest, like air communication and Empire trade. It would give an opportunity which possibly would never recur, lor consolidating relations.
SUPPORT FOR MIXERS. ' LONDON", July 1-’. The General Council of the Trade Union Congress, after meeting the ex ccutive of the -Miners’ Federation, issued a manifesto endorsing the hitter’s refusal to meet the coal owners until the hitter’s proposals were withdrawn, undertaking to co-operate whole-heartedly with the miners’ resistance to what they term the degradation of the standard of life. A committee was appointed to maintain continuous contact with the negotiations now proceeding, with powers to summon a general council if nceessa ry.
Mr W. C. Bridgeman (First Lord of the Admiralty) has sent a letter to the Coal Owners’ Federation, saying hi' had been president of the coal miners who, while declining to withdraw the notices to terminate the agreement, recommended the continuance of negotiations. The Federation replied regretting the coal miners had refused a reasonable request namely, the withdrawal of the notices.

Hamstead. after four years work, has won the international race for the benefit of humanity, by the discovery of the organism which causes cancer, which is .responsible for one out of every seven deaths over fifty years of age. Tho “Daily Express’’ adds that false expectations should not be created. It is the cause, not the cure of cancer which has been discovered, but the discovery gives a definite hope of grappling with the disease. Full details of the discovery will be published this week.
