At a meeting of the Otago Hospital Board this afternoon, a letter was read from the Mayor, stating that a deputation to him had suggested that an independent Chairman should he appointed to the Conference of the Honorary Medical Stair at the Hospital and the Board, which is to he held to define the duties of the Medical Superintendent and tin* House Stall’s, as the result of the recent Robertson
Tho members of the Hoard expressed their indignation at the nature of the request, and a resolution was unanimously carried, expressing confidence in its own chairman, and pointing out that the Hospital Board was resolved to deal itself with its own business. A letter was also received from the Medical Superintendent (Dr Falconer) protesting against the finding of the Board in its reference to him, and suggesting that it should lie withdrawn until an inquiry on the administration was held.
Consideration of the matter was deferred till next meeting of the Board.
GRAY’S APPEAL DISMISSED. WELLINGTON. Julv 9
The New Zealand Racing Conference decided to-night in tin* matter of an ap]K*al by H. E. Gray, jockey, against the decision of the Canterbury District Committee, in disqualifying ilie* said S. E. Gray for life front lne 27th. May, 1926. for corrupt practice, under Pari: XXXII, Rule 1. Clause A. of the Rules of Racing. The judgment was: “We have carefully heard the appeal of 11. E. Gray, and we are, unanimously of the opinion that ho has failed to bring any evidence which would justify us in upholding his appeal. We therefore dismiss the appeal. (,signed) E. Milvhelson. BODY IN HARBOUR. AUCKLAND, July 9. The body of Norman Brazier, aged 44. was found in the harbour to-day. The deceased was employed as a labourer by the Mount Albert Borough Council.

After a lengthy debate the Council leeided to adopt a universal tram are of three pence per medium of a welve trip ticket, the present fare o remain for a one-trip ride.
OIL PROSPECTING. GISBORNE*. July 10. ft is reported that Taranaki oil wells ave assumed a controlling interest in u* Gisborne Oil Proprietary, which re’litly has been investigating the pusblities of petroleum development in lis district, and geologists (till come i Gisborne from Taranaki for a dotail--1 .stirvev.
The work, meantime, of geologists dreaily here, has been hampered by bad weather.
A FURIOUS DRIVER. THAMES. July 10. Joe Ivnukoviteh. was charged with reckless driving on a country road while returning from Paeron races. He attempted to pass another car, while travelling at a high speed, causing both cars to capsize into an open ditch, and injuring several persons. He was lined twenty pounds with costs, and an order issued that he be not granted a drivers’ license for two years.

W. Green, manager of Ruakura State Farm, lias received notice ol transfer to Ifawkes Bay. Mr Green lias been at Ruakura for eighteen years. FIRE IN GRAIN STORK. INVERCARGILL, July in. A fire occurred at three this morning in Wright, -Stephenson and Cobs extensive brick grain store in Tweed St., containing a large quantity of oats, ■to. The brigade was hampered by poor pressure of water, but succeeded ■n confining the flames to the Grain Department, the larger stores, including the Manures Department, being undamaged. The property was Lilly covered by insurance, particulars being unavailable.
THREE MONTHS HARD. CHHISTCHCRCH. July Hi. Charles Jackson was sentenced to three months gaol this morning on a charge ot having lelt New Zealand without permission within one year of the making of an afiiliati against him.
