[Australia A N.Z. Cable Association.] BRITAIN'S POLICY. LONDON, July (!. In the House of Lords, Lord Asquith initiated a debate on foreign policy in Lurope. Lord Grey participated in the discussion. He described the idea of a polity of British isolation as an impossible one. The Dominions ought i > be consulted at every point, and we should do everything to carry them with us. hut no pressure must ho put on them to undertake obligations, lie hoped that the Dominions would realise that, though they might not Re willing to undertake obligations, yet it was essential that the British Government should interest itself in European affairs. Lord Balfour, replying, said that, in regard to the evacuation of Cologne, the British Government was awaiting the German reply to the Era neo-British disarmament, note. He was not inclined to agree wiili Lord Grey's contention that prestige of European civilisation has declined since the war, but such would he the ease if an agreement did not emerge from the German suggestions. The Government had not considered that progress in arbitration principles would bo helped by Britain assuming additional responsibilities in Eastern Europe, beyond those covered by the League Covenant. ' In concluding the debate. Lord Cave said that a pact had not yet been framed, but it would be in the course of negotiation in a tew days.
