THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
The Tuvin: B.wio.u eteii. The excess ol exports over imports last year was equivalent to a value ol nearly four millions. This was a balance of trade satisfactory enough no doubt from mo-l points of view, though even so. one insufficient, to meet the country's interest bill. H is to lie remembered, a!-o that, although production in the Dominion is increasing, there has been a greater increase in the values i ban the quanlilies. and that any serious drop in the prices ol the country's products in the markets ol the world would leave very little margin mi its trade. I’ast experience should have taught New Zealand traders the value of caution, and there is no reason to suggest, that, the mercaiilib* community has already disregarded the object lesson ill tlie danger of importation that was provided only lour .short years ago. But last year's trade indicates that the volume of the country's imports will bear caretul watching. "Otago Daily T imes."
