[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] YACHT RACE. SAN FRANCISCO, July 5. It is learned that Norris’ yacht Mariner won the race to Tahiti. The vessel arrived at Papeete on July Ist., hut owing to thirty hours handicap given other entrants, no word was sent out till that time elapsed. U.S.A. SCIENTIFIC ENTERPRISE. WASHINGTON, July .3. The United States Navy Department is preparing to send an expedition to Sumatra, to observe tbe solar eclipse that will Is; visible there on January 11th. The expedition which will sail from San Francisco on September Ist., will include astronomers from the Naval Observatory at Washington, and Alt. Wilson Observatory, California. A cinema film, both of the eclipse and of the activities of the expedition will be made. A vessel will be sent to conduct radio experiments. The collection of zoological specimens for the National Museum is also projected.
