Tin: trade figures of the Dominion show that the exports for the month of May totalled £5,173,405, and the imports £3,930,480, an excess of exports of £1,242,923. For the five months the exports were £34,097,637, and the imports £21,220.297, the excess of exports being C 13.777.340. The imports continue to expand, and excluding specie, the figures for the five months were £21.220.2./7, as compared with £18,761,321, in the corresponding term of last year, an increase of £3,458,976, equal to about 19 f>or cent., or an average monthly gain of £700,000. The greatest single item of gain was in motor vehicles, the value of such imports for the five months being £1,968.501, ns against £1,282,549 in the five months of last year, and £863,218, in 1923. The increase over last year is £635,952. The number of motor vehicles imported totalled 10.262 as enmj pared with 7596 last year, and 4802 in 1923. The average value of the vehicles imported during the five months of this year works out at £192 as compared with £169 last, year, from which it may he inferred that this year more commercial vehicles are being imported, which, of course, are more expensive than the pleasure ears. During the 151 days making up the first five months of the year, there were imported each day on the average 68 vehicles of the average value of £13.036. The quantity of benzine imported during the five months was 13.837.825 gallons. a.s compared with 10,888,532 gallons in the corresponding term last vear.

The Government Statistician reports that while the entertainment tax yielded £137.510. for the financial year ended March 31st., 1923. it fell to £78,700 for last year. Taxation in general was £ll 19. sßd per head in 1923; but had risen to £l2 -Is in 192.1.
The Greymouth Orchestral Society has decided to dissolve after 2.3 years of a successful career. The lack ol players to replace those leaving the town is the reason for the disbandment. The property is to he sold and the proceeds given to the local hospital.

Mr R. C. Bishop, General Manager, of the Cliristelittreh Gas Company, who has been in ill health for some time past, retired from the company’s service its front July 1. mi extended leave, and after that on pension. Mr Bishop has been in the company's service for fifty-three veal's and is regarded throughout New Zealand its the father of the gas industry.

A "Wanganui correspondent states that for some time past there has boon a good deal of discussion among the Maoris regarding the formation of a new Katana Church, to embrace all denominations -who are members of the Ratana following. Yesterday a big meeting was held at Katana to discuss the proposal. It was attended by ministers from various denominations-. Otto of the Katana executivestates that in the organisation there are simp 8000 Church of England members, 5000 Catholics. 4000 Methodists. also Islatus. Kingatus. Shintos. Glorias. AYhitis. Presbyterians. Salvationists, Baptists, ami many others. It is estimated that the now church will have a following of about 25.000 to start with. Circulars have been sent out to other countries, setting out the objects of the church. Some replies have been received with promises ol support.
