NEW PETROL DANGER
LONDON. J tine 18. Tlie danger of static electricity causing an ouebreak of tire in a motor-car when the tank is filled with petrol is pointed out in the annual report of the Inspectors of Explosives. If the petrol tank is electrically insulated from the ground bv means of the rubber tyres of the ear, as it invariably is, the friction of the petrol being- poured into the tank may produce .sufficient static electricity to cause a spark which will ignite the Petrol. A fatal tire lias reently been caused in the United States in this way. A similar fatal explosion ws caused la-t Aucl ft:- at the 'Mr.dl-Mox works at Shell Haven, on the Essex side of the Thames estuary, and the company has i - sued instructions that during the tilling of a petrol tank the car must he “ earthed ” by a metal chain provided for the purpose. Tt has been demonstrated, says the report, that when any grade of paraffin or petrol is pumped through pipe lines static electricity is produced by the friction of the spirit against the walls of tlie pipe.
