GLOAMING SAILS FOR AUSTRALIA. Gloaming (accompanied bv the two-vear-old Society) left for Australia on Friday last, says the “N.Z. Times.” With his total earnings standing at £43.100, Gloaming has gone forth to renew old acquaintances and meet the budding champions of the Commonwealth. Despite his ago. which* is nine, lie stepped on hoard lull ot vigour. and in a manner which suggests that he is a champion that Time has forgotten. Racing from three to his present age, the grand old horse has only been once unplaced, and then through falling at the barrier. In his 07 races, Mr G. I>. Greenwood’s idol has been lieaten live times in Australia and live times in New Zealand. Ilis fastest times for various distances are: Four furlongs 45sec. (Trentban), five furlongs 08 3-osees. (Trentham). six furlongs linin. 10 2-5 see. (Rieearton), seven furlongs 1 min. 25 2-osees. (Rieearton). one mile 1 min. 37 1-osees (Ellorslie), nine furlongs I min. o2sec. (Randwiek), one mile ami n-half 2min. 32 2-osee. (El-h-rxlie). As a three year old Gloaming won £12.170 in stakes, his chief victory, that season, being the Australian Jockey Club Derby. At four years he annexed £4BO. . his principal success being the Craven Plate at the A..1.C. fixture. The next season he added £s(>3t) to his total. Then, in his sixth year, he won CSSOS in prizemoney. his crowning effort that season being in the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes. As a seven-year-old he rail second to Renuford in the Chelmstord Stakes, on whom he turned the tables ia llie Hill stakes. Then Reaulord heat him in the Spring Stakes, which 'Gloaming evened up by leading bis doughty opponent Inline- in the Craven Plate. Those events were run ill Australia. Il<- again returned to the Do-
minion. where during the next season he contributed £2205 to his now handsome list of winnings. This season he opened his account by following tin- winner home ill the Chelmsford Slakes. Heroic being his victor. In his next effort he finished second to Ballymena. His third- race was the A..J.C. Spring Stakes, which he won. This he followed up by showing a clean pair of heels io his competitors in the Craven Plate. He then visited Melbourne, where he romped home in the Melbourne Stakes. After returning to New Zealand, he added the C.J.C. Middle Park Plate. North Island Challenge Stakes. Hawke’s Bay Stakes, concluding his season’s racing by heating The Hawk in the J. 1). Ormond Memorial Cup. thus bringing his total winnings up to £43.100. which is a record. His trainer R. J.
