Cremation is much more talked about than practised in Auckland. Since the crematorium was opened at Wuikumete in August. 1923, a total of seventy bodies have been s> disposed of. The number of deaths in Greater Auckland since August Ist. 1923 was 3333, cremation. therefore, representing a little over 2 per cent.

Headers will rem.-mber that in November 1923, the Government removed the protection on door in certain portions of the following Acclimatisation flistriets :--Marlborough. Nelson, North CnnlciT.urv. Otago, Southland. Westland, Waitaki. and that a grant'of XD.fKI!) was made for i.ho purpose of assisting settlers in the thinning out of the animals. The amount was divided amongst the Districts concerned, in proportion to the number of deer estimated to he in each District. In each case one-third of the amount was available lor the Accli matisntion Societies at the rate of Is per tail for every animal killed hy them, or on their behalf, in those portions of their Districts where protection had not been removed. The remaining two-thirds has been Hist ri /inteil at the rate of 2s pier deer tail to any person who killed deer in the areas wherein protection had been removed. and produced the tails to the person authorised to receive the same. The amount granted has now been almost completely exhausted, and as the deer are still present in large numbers, the Government has granted an additional sum of 1 1.000 for the purpose of further assisting the work. Such further sum has been allirated between the Districts concerned in proportion to the numbers of deer killed in such Districts, under the original grant.

The remains of the late Alt' Michael John (Alick) Thornton were interred at Karoro cemetery yesterday alternoon. the cortege being a lengthy one. A detachment of returned soldiers acted as pall hearers. In the morning solemn Ueipiieni Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church bv the Bcv. Father Houluhau, assi-ted l.y the Rev. Father Fogarty, who also conducted the service at the graveside.
