The boxing contest of twenty rounds for the British and Kuropean lightweight ehiimnioiisliip resulted in Harry Mu -nil (Kuropean ihampion) heating Ernie Izzard (British champion) in the ninth round. It is understood that, although fzzard was obvioiislv beaten, the referee awarded the fight to Mason on the grounds that I Award's seconds remained in the ring alter the gong. Pandemonium ensued, and women fainted. LONDON, dune 23. Mason was aggressive, and forced the light from the start. He had the better of the o|>ening rounds, but Fzzard improved in the fourth and fifth rounds, and there wa- not much between them in the next two. In the eighth round. Mason floored Izzard with a smashing left to the jaw. There was then a terrific uproar when Mason, thinking that Izzard had taken the full count, went to assist him to rise.
* The referee told them to box on. and -Mason attacked fiercely. He floored his staggering opponent several times. When the hell went for the ninth, round i’.zard remained seated in his corner. The referee therefore awarded the tight to Mason.
