Professor M align nl is a specialist who knows his subjects thoroughly, and |)r Douglas in “.Medical Seieuee” congratulates hint “on his brilliant conception of neutralising the toxic effects of the organisms killed by the eliemot licrapenl ic agent, hy means ot an antiserum.” In non-teelinical language. a serum is injected into the flood to prepare it for the digesting the dead tuberculosis bacilli. I'.ithei before or after the blood is thus prepi, red, a new substance. Snuocrysiu is injected in weak solution. Sanocrystn kiils the bacilli: tie serum eliminates the poisons which have been caused hy the presence of the dead bacilli. Saltoerysin. according to the review, is :i compound salt of gold and sodium.. It is solid snow white substance comuosod ol long neetlle-like crystals. Ds activity is amazing. A solution of I in 100.000 kills the bacillus and of !in 1.00,000 prevents its growth. Sanoerv.sin without the serum kills the bacilli, but it also kills the patient when it is tried on animals. But where its administration is combi nod with a serum it has healed animals even when the case was an advanced one. With human beings in the Danish hospitals the results have been Impel til, though there have been some failures. It is expected that with further knowledge and with the preparation of a more efficient and powerful serum greater success may he achieved. At present the use of saltoerysin is only in its infancy, hut good medical opinion holds that the world is on the eve of a discovery which will revolutionise treatment and perhaps exterminate l überculosis.
