Before the war, Mr Henry Gullet, one of Sydney’s best-known citizens, gave Sir Bertram Alackennal ft commission for a Shakespeare memorial group, for the adornment of Sydney, and for the enrichment of ft city somewhat poor in imposing statuary. Not long after the sculptor had accepted the commission, Mr Gullet died, hut his family honoured tho costly undertaking, and before long Sydney will look upon one of the noblest groups ol stiltuarv in Australia, executed at a cost of over £12,000. The group, arresting in its conception, and in its massiveness, has been lying at the hack of the Aliteheil f.ihray in Macquarie street for some time, awaiting a decision as to its final position. It will he erected close to the proposod National Library building, in the vicinity of the Aliteheil Library and the Botanic Gardens and Domain gates, where a general scheme of reinodellincr is ill hand. Here, in harmonious surroundings, it will give grace and beauty to a part of the city much Irequanted by tho public in its leisure week-end hours. In connection with the National Library, it is proposed at a later stage, to set aside a separate section for Shakespearian:). COMMUTED DEATH SENTENCE. SYDNEY, June IS. After being marooned three months on Nassau, which is a lonely island in the Pacific, castaways from the auxiliary schooner Samoa, owned hy BurnsPhilip South Sea Company were discovered hy the American yacht Goodwill, whose owner wirelessed the news to Apia. It is reported the Samoa is a total reck. The schooner was lost on the 29th April. The passengers and crew are safe. The Lady Roberts has sailed trom Apia to rescue the castaways. The Samoa was built ftt Whangaroa ip 1902.
