Clreat numbers are attending the Big I 1 air in aid of the Hokitika Beautifying Society, indicating the desire to give practical support to that usclul organisation which has given so useful a lead in improving the appearance of the public grounds. To-night. there will he a special entertainment at the Hall, which is sure to he crowded for the occasion. The New Zealand Meat Producers Board has been negotiating with the Shipping Companies in respect to the freight on general cargo from Freezing Works, and it has now been arranged that the Shipping Companies will carry general cargo by direct steamer to Italy at Loudon rates. It has also been arranged that as lrom the Ist October next the Shipping Companies will carry general cargo llavre-Ham-burg range at London rates whether delivered direct or by transhipment. Messrs McMahon and Lee report having hold their usual sale fixture at the above yards last .Monday, ihe yarding comprised 18 head lat cattle, 270 fat shape and 75 store sheep. The attendance of buyers was not quite up to the usual standard, and competition was not very keen, especially for fat cattle, the best demand being for fat sheep. There was an overilowing attendance at the (soldiers’ Hall last night for tho weekly euchre of the ICS.A. when special prizes were offered. Ihe lucky table holders were Miss l’ugh. Mesdames A. Oroufsky, Dent and Mr Scott. ’ The ladies’ prizes were won after a tie by .Airs Davies (bus fancy handkerchiefs) Mrs Sumner (butter knife and jam spoon): gents’ prizes.
