"It constitutes a remarkable tribute to the memory of the illustrious statesman who represented the constituency in Parliament through almost the whole period of his nolitical career, and whoso Ins- Franklin, in common with the rest of the Dominion, honours to-day. Moreover, the result shows, in no uncertain manlier, that the electors have turned a deaf ear to fanciful and socialistic doctrines which were placed before them. Mr McLeiinan’s victory will he hailed by all of our fellow citizens who have the cause of sound and stable Government at heart.”

WHAT FRANKLIN PROVES. WELLINGTON. June 18. Commenting on the Franklin result Mr T. M. Wilford, (Leader of the Lih-eral-l-abour Party) said the result lias proved what every Liberal elector knows, namely, that the followers of Karl Marx cannot disguise themselves v.ith the mantles of Ballance and Sodden. The result, shows that the constitutional authority when challenged received the support of Reformers and Liberals alike.
