At the Magistrates’ Court, Christchurch on Tuesday, the case in which P. Stephens of Hokitika (Mr G. A. G. Connal) was sued by AV. J. Doyle, of Doyleston (Mr AV. .J. Hunter, instructed bv Messrs Smithson and Mosley) for the sunt of £2O Ss 7d. alleged to he the balance owing in respect of expenses incurred for the defendant's racehorse, Ins Worship gave judgment for the defendant, with £l3 13s o<l costs.

Rugby football, although considered by most followers ol the sport, to he a rough game, does not necessarily mean that all players get an equal share of the hard knocks. Some are fortunate enough to go through many seasons with hardly a scratch, while others seemed to lie dogged with sheer had luck. There is such a case in Hokitika (his season, one player being most unfortunate in ibis respect, he being continually hospitailed. The Rugby I'nion have notified that next Saturday's gate takings will he handed over to the injured player as a benefit, and it is hoped the public will respond generously.
The Big Fair at the Soldiers’ Hall to-morrow will he a notable event. Itwill open to the public at 2 o’clock in tho afternoon and 7 o’clock in tho evening. This big function is being organised as a. benefit to tbc Hokitika Beautifying Society. The event should command the practical support of the community. Many novelties will lie on sale in addition to a wide range of useful articles. Those forwarding gifts to the Fair may send in the goods in the forenoon when workers will he busy preparing for the event. Those competing in the elocutionary and dancing com pet it ions should attend in good time. The Highland Fling will take place at 3 o'clock and the reciting at 3.30 o'clock. The recalls will he heard in the evening commencing at 7..30 o’clock.
