A strung plea by three solicitors lor the suppression of the names ol lour young men who appeared in the .Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of theft from warehouses and receiving stolen goads was refused by Mr .). V. . Piivntou, S.M. Ibe request, lor suppression of the names was made on the ground that they were young men mid had succumbed to tile temptation ol being surrounded by large quantities ol goods. “Where there is a combination to • mnniit crime, it is more grave than a case of individual giving way to
temptation,” said Mr l’oynton in rchising the application. ‘lt is sympathetic .j' ;1 dccncr social malady and <•< ncerns the community much more than solitary cases. There is a greater ..head of exposure among the iv.mspira-t-ors and tlie- inducement to terrorise, mid even murder, to prevent discovery is very strong. We see present-day examples in the O’Brien and Brady feuds ill Melbourne, the murder gangs in Chicago, and the war between the rival racial dubs in London, leading to bloodshed and other crimes of violence. Where a number of intending law-breakers unite to prey on others, ami do so. as in this case, it is right that, the community should know tlietn.”
Tin* surest ion of combination uns again refuted by Air Olinliaut. who later made a further appeal for the suppression of the names at least until aftm- sentence had been passed. Mr I’ovnton : In these cases not only names, hut also photographs should he published. Combinations are dangerous t> the public, and it is a. case where the interests of society arc concerned. The Magistrate deferred sentence for a week, bail in each case being allowed.
