The Council of New Zealand Association called on E. M. Dean to undertake it three weeks’ lour in North Canterbury, and he refused, claiming his engagement was for the North Island only. Abbott, who is away from New Zealand was cabled to. and replied that Deans’ acceptance was unconditional. Nevertheless Dean persisted that he would give up his position rather than go south, and the Council accepted his resignation, informing him it. was greatly disappointed at liis action, which was regarded as n distinct, breach of his agreement.
