AN APPEAL.

[ TFIK HEATTIFYIN'C SOCIETY. •SiJ-, —This Society is again appealing for funds. When it was formed about three years ago, the promoters stressed the fact, that it would be futile fo merely put Cass and MeAndrew Squares in order, and then let them go back to their former state. During the last three years about Cl .100 has been spent bv Ihe Rorough Council and lloautifying Society in effecting improvements and putting these grounds in their present state of cific.’enev. and funds are now urgently required tor the purpose of doing further work anil general cost of maintenance. it is sometimes contended that the work should lie done entirely by the iiorongh Council. I do not agree with this. There are many members of loothall and oilier clubs, who are not rate-payers, but who generally show a laudable desire to assist in the work

ef improving their sport’s ground. The Borough Council has certainly done more assisting to beautify am improve Cross and AlcAndrew £ qua ret during Iho last few years than evei was done in the past, and ( feel suit that the rate-payers generally approve if tlie expenditure, f t must, however. ;e recognised that the Council can only • pend a limited portion of their annual ■evenue on such work.

Cass Square is becoming one of the most popular and perfect sports i grounds on the West Coast. It is certainly one of the nto.sl valuable assets that Hokitika possesses, and Hie people are recognizing, more and more, that it is their park. I pen these lines for the purpose of pointing out that on Friday. Rn.li, a Fair is to be held in the Soldiers’ Hall ill Hokitika for the purpose of raising funds to enable the Society to earry on. and to appeal to the citizens, including the members of various Sports Club, for liberal support on Inis occasion. it there are any who feel that they cannot assist otherwise, our Society will he glad to receive donations from Is upwards. Rinialions will he thankfully received by any member of the Finance Committee, namely Messrs' S. Preston, I). J. Evans, James Niven, and myself. I. am. etc, H. L. AI rCTTEL, President. Hokitika. .Tune 9th, 1920.
