Becoming tired of a fund inn in progress at (Hira on April It. a young man named Arthur Wallis left the hall and set out in search of fre-h i nlertainmeut. Being inlormed that an old circular saw was used as the local lire I**ll, he conceived a brilliant idea of setting lire to a heap ol straw and ringing the “hell.'' with the object ol turning out the Fire Brigade. The •‘joke" proved a boomerang, however, and resulted in his appearance ut the Greymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Air W. Aleldrum, A. AC. when Wit lli- was charged with wilfully selling on lire a quantity of straw, upon land not hi- own property or in his ow n uceupat ion. (unstable Calwell, of (Mil'll, said lie did not see the actual lire, hut saw where it had been. The mark- were four or live feet from the front porch of a Irnt-e. There was no real danger to (lie building under the cii'ciinistanros as people were near a- the time. Ihe AlagisIrato said (hat the ullelice did nut appear very serious. Wallis would he convicted and lined £l, with costs.

At the .Magistrate's Court Greymouth yesterday Arthur Jacobs a sawmill hand residing at Kaiata was charged that at (liniitn. on .May 2. he did kill native game, to wit, Paradise ducks, during the closed season, lie pleaded not guilty. Defendant pleaded tlmt he thought they were grey ducks. Lengthy evidence was given including that of a lad named Blair who said he tuts with Ins lather and also saw' Jacobs. The ducks shot were Paradise ducks and were shot by Jacobs. There were no grey ducks visible, although witness had seen grev ducks at the same place on previous occasions. He told Jacobs they were Paradise ducks luit Jacobs said nothing. Mr MiCorlhy asked that under the circumstances a nominal penalty lie imposed. It was the first i life nee of its kind at Groyiuouih. and lie understood that the ease was brought in order to let people know that the Greymouth Jockey Club intended to make the area a sanctuary. There was no doubt, that the ducks were Paradise ducks, said the Magistrate. and thul defendant knew what kind they were. He had not made it easier for himself by coming to touit and swearing that they were gie\ ducks.. He would be convicted and fined £4, with Court costs and witnesses expenses.
