7-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT

A. VERY SUCCESSFUL DAY

The Westland Sub Union were favoured with a. splendid day yesterday for tlie annual sevcn-a-side tournament on Cass Square. The - ground also was in splendid order and there was no wind. There was a large attendance of the public, the gate being nearly £47, and a. capital day’s sport was given, hi Ike limits especially were the games good but the best football was provided in the filial o* tlie Third grade when School \ and Kiwi A gave a very fine exhibition Binii sides played the passing game and thiev handled Wonderfully well, in marked emitra.st, to the- handling of tlie older players and it was. only, the fact that tlm School sustained their passing lo a sueeessiul end that gave them victory. In addition the school place kicker gave a very line exhibition, easily the best of the day and in four attempts kicked a penally goal and converted three tries. The Shrimps also had their admirers and generally they gave a capital account of themselves, tlieir play being marked with clean ii nulling, and good tackling. The .junior games were hardly up to the standard and several of the games were very poor in contrast with the oilier play. Tlie senior games only numbered three, but tlie final was a very line wind up to the day's play. From the start the play Hashed old and Kiwis in tile first minute with a combined rush went over to score a good fry. I lie play continued up and down the field with Hashes of individual play and then from a clever cross kick Wogan got posseession and ran from halt-way to score. There was a hue contest tor the balance of the allotted time with Kiwis having a little the better of the play. Time was up with the score even and then play had to continue to Jim! Die winner. Up and down tlie play went with Kiwis attacking and ultimately MeCleary went over to score and win I lie game. After tlie conclusion of the play Mr F. McGregor ( I'resident of the SubUnion). congratulated the players on tlie splendid exhibition given during the day. and thanked ihe donors of the special prizes, especially mentioning the Ladies Hockey Club who donated tin- handsome cup that was won outright by the.
