Angus .MeDonga 11. aged about 45, a widower, employed as Yard Foreman, at Thorndnn Station, was killed on the line at 12.15 p.m. on Saturday. He was standing oil a side line talking to tho engine driver of a suburban train at the north end of the platform at Thormlon. He stepped hack on to tho main line, and was struck by a postal van. which" was in front of an engine and was being pushed down to join an Auckland train. MeDotigall was carried some distance. When picked - was badly mutilated and died within a few minutes. MOTOR PENS DOWN TWO WOMEN. DUNEDIN. May 31. A serious motor accident occurred at Moriiington yesterday afternoon, when two women, Agnes McLean, aged' - 2d. single ; ami Peggy' Mahon, single, were run down in Elgin Road, hy a motor ear carrying two men. The victims of ibis sudden accident were crushed hv tin' ear against a water trough. Miss McLean was taken to the hospital with a compound fracture of the left leg, which it was found neeessarv to amputate. Shff was 'suffering ether minor injuries as well. Tier companion. Miss Mahon, has injuries to her hack. and is suffering from shock. GISBORNE, May 31. As the result of a collision with a motor-ear on Saturday night, a middleaged man. named John llyan. married, lies in a serious condition in Cook Hospital, suffering front a fractured -kull. Tho t uxidrivei". named Allan Fran.-is l.iltler. was coming up Glad'tone Road in heavy rain, soon after six o'clock on Saturday evening, driving about ten miles an hour. He saw Ryan cross the road, apparently to hoard a tramear. hut then he stopped hack, l.iltler applied his brakes, but Rvan was knocked down.
HOTEL BURNED DOWN. GISBORNE. .May 31. The Tawhiti Hotel, Waipiro Bay, a large two-storey, modern structure of twenty rooms, overlooking the ocean, was completely destroyed by fire, with the contents, at a late hour last night. The detail' are meagre, hut it is stated the lire started on the bottom floor. There were nine hoarders at the hotel, hut all escaped safely. The property was owned by J. E. Petrie, of learnron. the licensee being Mrs McCullough. The insurances are: In the New Zealand insurance Company. £3OOO on the building; LOGO on the electric light : and £2OO on the engine-house Av' and wash-house, and £IOO and £SO cm Mrs McCullough's personal furniture; in the United Office £IOOO on the building : in the Commercial Union Office £St)(l oil the furniture, and £l5O on the stores. FARMER KILLED. DAXXEVTRKE, May 31. John Douglas Galloway, aged 41, a farmer, married, with a wife and six children, aiul residing at Mahnrahara, died at the Hospital to-day from injuries received in an accident at his farm on Friday. Deceased went to get a load of firewood and was found some ten hours later pinned underneath a load, which had capsized. lie was intcrnally injured and suffered from shock aiid he collapsed on -Saturday. A CAR THIEF. CHRISTCHURCH. May 30. At ihe Magistrate's Court to-day, Roderick Janies Parnieiiter. aged 24, pleaded guilty to a charge of till lawfully ioiiverting to hi.s own use. but not so i.s to he guilty of theft, a motor car valued at £250, and also with being intoxicated while in charge of a car. Magistrate Widdowson said lie wished to emphasise, again the gravity of olfeiues of this kind. Apparently they '•'ere on the increase, and if they continued to conic Indore him, he would have to increase the penalty that ho was imposing. In the ease before him, a young man of 24 had been convicted of theft before. Apparently he did not have a respect for the property of other people. When lie saw tit to take a car or anything, else, he seemed just Lo take it. There had been no damage done, and he would take that into ciiisideration. Parnieiiter would ho sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment on each charge—one to follow the other—one month in all. MASONIC. WELLINGTON, May 31. There was a large attendance of tho Masonic Order at the Town Hall this afternoon at a I.edge of Sorrow hold in memory of the lute Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand 1/nlge of New Zealand, lit. Hon. W. F. Massey. The service, which was held under the auspices of the Wellington City and Suburban Lodges, was conducted by Provincial Grand Master Right Worshipful Brother George Russell. An eloquent eidogism of the late Grand Master as a Mason, as a statesman of the Dominion and Empire, and as a Ilian, was pronounced by Very Worshipfill Brother Rev. W. Shirer, Past Grand Chaplain. Suitable solos and hymns were sung. Organist K. Parker played Chopin’s funeral march, and the hall was tastefully draped in purple and black.
