A COMING FAIR.

n Friday, June 19th, a Monster Fair is to be held at the Soldier* Hall in aid of the funds of the Hokitika Beautifying Society. Ihe organisation is such tt deserving one. that no elaboartion on that aspect is needed at this juenture. Suffice it to sav that the funds ot the Society are in debit ami liabilities undischarged, so that extra money must be raised quickly to overcome the stringency.

The Fair which i* to be held in less than three weeks’ time will be a novel mixture of display and entertainment-. There are to be goods on sale—including manv Anglo-Japaneso novelties, together with a fine show ol mi blooms and an interesting exhibition of fancy work. A special feature too will be tlie cookery competition lor which there is

likely to be the keenest interest. Quite the most special feature will he a juvenile elocutionary competition. 1 here will be three sections open to all schools and the entrants may choose their own subject in prose or poetry. I lie three classes will be for children under 9. 12 iiiul l."> years, ami all will be beard in the afternoon, commencing at 3 o clock. At night at 7.39 the recalls will be taken, and the final awards announced. This should prove a useful and interesting feature, and is sure to be popular. At night there will be a promenade concert and the completion ol the elocutionary competition, winding up with a dance. There will lie plenty of music, voial and instrumental, while visitors will lie able to obtain refreshments in the annexe, both afternoon and evening. 'there will be a sale ol the cooking exhibits during the day and night, while numerous gifts and novelties will lie obtainable at bargain prices. In the adjoining rooms, there will lie games and side shows, all helping to bring grist to the mill. There will be all the fun of a Fair and being under cover in roomy quarters a very jolly time will be passed. The Soviety is planning a big day and a bigger night, am! will be glad ol all the help which will volunteer to assist with the stalls and the various departments. A substantial sum of money must be raised on the occasion in question, and with the ready help of the willing workers of the* community the end in view will he attained. All willing to assist and co-operate in tin's event of outstanding importance for the benefit of the town and the improvement of its appearance should notify the Hon Mr Michel (Preisdent) or Mr J. Niven Hon Secretary).
