A WONDER GATHERING
liabydom had a real day out yesterday afternoon at the .Soldiers’ llall, when the Baby Show and cookery competition took place. The afternoon was bright, sunny, and warm, and this helped to attract, a record attendance to the hall. The scene in the vicinity of the Soldiers’ Hall .shortly after two o'clock could not fail to attract the attention of passers by. Mothers and their friends with their baby charges, made quite an imposing gathering. For once in a while the motor ear took a back seat, and tile perambulator and go-earl came into its own. There was quite an imposing array of these useful '.'images, which numbered over fitly, ' ll sizes and shapes living in evidence. Inside the spacious Soldiers' Hall, {here was a capital attendance, the fair sex, with their charges, ol course being in a substantial majority.
On tallies in the centre of the hall were placed the entries for the cookery classes. Though not large in nnmber the quality of the exhibits was of a high class, and they were generally commended, approval being shown also bv the ready sale that was made of these exhibits later in the afternoon, the whole being sold out very readily. Naturally special interest centred in the haliies. Tim seating accommodation of the ball was soon taxed and quite a large lot of extra seating room had to lie hurriedly provided to enable the large gathering to be seated, the Moor space of the large hall being well covered. It was a very imposing and attractive scene, with Hokitika’s mothers and their olfspring in proud array. Included were a uuiulkm' of entries from the country districts. Tito babies in arms were in wondrous good humour too. and there was hardly a crying tone to lie heard during the afternoon. Withal there was a constant munnur of conversation in which the youngest ones even appeared to lie taping a special delight, gurgling over with joyous outbreaks of good humor and playfulness. 'I here was great interest' taken in the judging of the various classes and Matron Hamilton of Westland Hospital and Sister AtoMillli 11 of Dr. Bard’s staff bad no light task in selecting the prize winners, but their awards were received with genera] satisfaction. The prize winners at the juvenile fancy dress hall were entertained, and presented with their trophies. Gramophone records were rendered during ihe afternoon. Altogether tlm hall wore a very animated appearance. The afternoon was voted a great success. KITH UK AKSKAIBKY. The usual prices will he given for next Thursday's play, the donors being ATes,himes Turner and Holland, and Air U. l.ynn. There will he lucky table prizes also for the evening.
