- AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION BUDGET CRITICISED. LONDON. May 25. In the House of -Commons, Air Phillip Snowden (Ex-Chancellor of the Exchequer) moved the rejection of the Budget. Air Lloyd Ceorge vigorously support>ed the motion. He lomplnined of the failure to cut down the expenditure, especially that on armaments. He expressed the opinion that the Singapore base,-in particular was sheer madness, in view of the terrible Japanese earthquake. which must (ompletely put any plan of agression out of the Japanese minds, even if they had been previously disposed to contemplate it. In reply Air Churchill (Chancellor of the Exchequer) denied that the Budget' had incurred unpopularity throughout ' the country. He facetiously compared tin* remissic-i: of taxation under his “millionaire's'' Budget with that granted by the Socialist Chancellor, Mr -.Snowden. He declared that the more lie hoard of the silk trade, the more lie was convinced of its excellence, and subject to modifications made with a large measure of agreement, he was sure that it would become a permanent tax. He added that the Government did not intend postponing the pensions’ scheme, and he foreshadowed a fur- s ther step in the Government policy before the end of the year, which would dispel any anxiety vegarjling the burden which the pensions were placing on i ud tvs try. Mr Baldwin, Prime Minister, domed a suggestion made by Air Ramsay daeDonald that the silk tax was pure and simple protection. He said that Ah- Churchill had put the coping stone on the rehabilitation of Britain by restoring the gold standard, which -’e Premier described as “absolutely knave proof.” He stirringly appealed to tlm employers and the workers to 00-c-pe rate as being the sole means of improving the industrial situation and the meeting of foreign competition. They should pool their brains and scrap r.b solcte Works, ami leant the power of concentrated work. Air Snowden’s amendment was rejected by Til votes to 1!«). The Bill was road the second time.
In reply to a question Air Guinness stated that the revised estimates of tliQ yield of the duties on silk and artifu ud silk was £:i.SO().PO'J for the current year and £l>.lC-0,0:!J for a full financial year.
